12 principles of Motion
ARC
For movement to be more realistic and simpler, we make its trajectory to follow an arc path. This makes it more realistic due to the effect of gravity on the objects.
FOLLOW THROUGH
When an object starts and end its movements, different parts of its movement will move at different rates, this helps give weight and expression to the animation, also leaving a trace of the trajectory helps create an idea of speed. Hanging objects that are lighter and attached to the main body of action will also only accompany the object with it. Adding some bounce back to the last frames of when the body comes to a standstill also gives this idea of follow through.

LEADING THE EYE
In this principle you aid the viewer’s eyes throughout the animation, by creating a easy to follow movement you can dictate where the viewer is looking at. Leading the viewers attention using techniques of movement, framing, colour, contrast and more…
Throughout our attention flows easily between the quick and chaotic animation, our eyes flow easily on the screen, without jumping back and forth.
GOOD SYNTHIS WITH MUSIC
Music and motion design work very well in combination. Used well music can completely change various aspects of the animation. In addition to adding character to the motions and aesthetic, Music and sounds create deeper and more emotionally ruch experience. It can provide continuity in transitions of shots, it can direct attention of the viewer, it can establish the mood or even inform the viewer of something about to happen. Overall animation and music together if properly timed and placed can heighten the experience of both the animation and of the music.

EASE IN AND EASE OUT
All life-like motion starts slowly, accelerates and slows down to complete movements, without this principle motion seems mechanical and linear, which is not realistic. This can be achieved by giving the animated subject more frames at the beginning and end and less in between the start and end.

At 14:00 the projection on the building, shows a good example to create a realistic object falling down. (easier to watch with slowed down speed) the broken objects take time to accelerate from a rested position and then slow down again they impact the ground.
ANTICIPATION
The preparation of an action done by a subject or object in a animation. This gives time for the viewer to fully understand what the upcoming action will be, this helps make the animation appear more realistic ( preparation for jumping, like bending of knees and pulling the body down, for it to eventually push up and jump). Anticipation helps the viewer understand actions, by clearly demonstrating what the subject will do, the viewer can better process what object in the animation is doing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LzN3WPeIhtY (PROMOTIONAL VIDEO) At around 0.20 seconds we see clearly how the hand prepares for the tapping of the screen, this helps the hand feel more realistic and anticipated the viewer to what’s going to happen. This helps to convey the idea that this app is as simple as a single touch on the screen, and also transition to a different shot.
SCREEN DEPTH
Using contrasts in size, colour, detail and animation speed we can give three dimensionalitto 2d animations, giving the “illusion” of depth in the scene or shot. Things that are farther away have smaller and less detail than things closer to the camera. Changing the saturation and brightness, we can also create a sense of depth (multiplanning) farther away distances being less saturated and/or even darker. Also, things that are more farther away move more slowly and nearer objects and planes move quicker.

In this animation, that uses different styles, we can see various uses of screen depth to create vast spaces like cities and small ducklings, forests with giants. While we move back and forth with the camera. Changing constantly perspectives and views.
SECONDARY MOTION
Its an action or movement that happens as a consequence of another motion, they add realistic depth and complexity to compositions. It cannot over stage the main body of action, it needs to complement it. Bigger changes in the secondary motions should be done in-between pauses of the main action so that they can be read more easily.
https://vimeo.com/showcase/1737141/video/90864477 (COMMERTIAL) At 00.08 s, we can’t see the main action, which is the wind, but the leaves moving around the scene, they are a consequence of the main action which is the wind since nothing else is moving except slightly the camera
STAGING
It is a quite broad principle since it can include various aspects of animation from timing, acting, setting, camera angle & position. By independently manipulating these, the animator can orient the viewers focal point to follow a certain action. By changing the camera angle and position we can better highlight the main motion in the animation (Far away camera for big actions, while close for expressions and smaller motions). Careful timing of letting one animation finish before another starts (Giving pauses between actions, gives time for people to breath) , and also the setting should reflect on the idea that one wants to convey ( Avoid adding unnecessary assets and overemphasize the mood or backstory of the action). Staging should clearly highlight the main action and expression without being up staged with other animations and assets. It is essentially how your visual elements are arranged in a frame, aim to keep a clean, simple and understandable visual language in the different shots.
Example: Strong compositions, dynamic lines of action, consistent visual language.
Examples of working predefined grids help keep animations clear and appealing like: Geometric shapes, rule of thirds, Fibonacci spiral, etc…

The horizontal line eases the viewer and the cursors reaction to the lines and shapes on the website help guide the viewers attention. Here the staging of the website simple animation clearly guides the viewer through her work and website.
STRETCH AND SQUASH
In order to create realistic and/or Convincing organic material using animation, a process called Squash and Stretch is applied. Basically, it is an objects elasticity, it can determine the weight, mass and trajectory of motion of an object. This gives life to objects and figures in motion, avoiding it to appear rigid and lifeless. This technique can be used to obtain a more accurate sense of gravity, giving them elasticity can also give more expression to motion.

´ This animated short squash and stretch techniques clearly convey the caterpillar’s elasticity, mass and motion, it is clearly shown at 1:09.
TIMING
Gives meaning to an action or movement, the speed of an object can determine a lot for the subject in motion. It defines how well the reader will understand a motion. It also can attribute characteristics to its subject, (a subject that has quick movements has more energy and seems more awake than a slow-moving subject). Timing and motion are different, timing determines the motion of the subject. It helps understand weight, scale and emotion of the subject.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJBjcgRLpbY (DISNEY MOVIE) In this scene we can see how the speed of the animation of the dwarfs represents or emphasizes an emotion of fear with a quick trembling movement on the candle, or the slow stepping on the stairs to not make a sound.
